In Windsor, North Carolina
Surrounding Bertie
County was formed as "Bertie Precinct" in 1722.
It was so named in honor of either James Bertie,
his brother Henry, or both, since each had been
among the Lords Proprietors of Carolina. During
the middle of the 18th century, the boundaries
of Bertie County shrank three times to form
other counties - first in 1739, then 1741, and
finally in 1759, when the county reached its
present size. |
Created by
Colonial Assembly in 1768, the town of
Windsor was named for the community and
castle in England. It was built on a
site called Gray's Landing, where
William Gray had offered 100 acres for a
town.
Average high temperatures in Windsor
only climb to 89 degrees Fahrenheit in
July, and average lows reach 31 degrees
in January. The monthly precipitation
average is 4 inches. Annual snowfall
averages a mere 6 inches.
Four public schools and one private
school offer education to local students
of all ages from pre-school up through
the end of high school.

Higher education is available at two
institutions within 40 miles of town
- East Carolina University and Pitt
Community College. Alternatives
available within 80 miles include
Tidewater Community College, Norfolk
State University, Christopher
Newport University and Old Dominion
University.
Bertie Memorial Hospital serves the
area's health care needs.
The 20-mile-long Cashie River offers
canoeing and fishing opportunities
just a few miles away from Windsor.
You can attempt to reel in some
impressive bass from these waters.
In addition, the Cashie Wetlands
Walk is a boardwalk that takes
visitors to the edge of the river,
past cypress trees and swampland
flora, and to an observation deck
where you can view various wildlife
and endangered waterfowl.
Much of Windsor is located today on
the same 100 acres that served as
the initial town site. That acreage
is now listed on the National
Register of Historic Places, and
many historic buildings still stand
there that include numerous churches
from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Bird-watchers will want to stop by
the Roanoke River National Wildlife
Refuge. These 20,978 acres provide
protection for migratory waterfowl,
endangered and rare fish, and even
some bald eagles.
Albemarle Sound is an extremely
popular fishing and boating
destination. Striped bass are
available year-round, and you might
also find flounder, red drum and
weakfish in the main basin. The
creek and backwater offshoots are
home to largemouth bass and crappie.
